Rehabilitation Institute Opens at PRMU
On June 22, the opening of the Institute of Rehabilitation was celebrated at Privolzhsky Research University. This is the central project of the university within the framework of Accessible Rehabilitation strategic project within the Priority 2030 program. The Institute opened with the support of the Government of the Nizhny Novgorod Region and the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation. The cost of creating the Institute exceeded 100 million rubles, 70 million whereof were allocated as part of Priority 2030. Patients from all over Russia and abroad will be able to undergo rehabilitation at the Institute.

The PRMU Rehabilitation Institute has unique technical equipment, exclusive for Russia: for example, a robotized complex for locomotor therapy, software and hardware systems with biofeedback, virtual reality technology, etc. Another distinctive feature is that people from different groups will be able to undergo rehabilitation there: stroke patients, those with musculoskeletal disorders, cerebral palsy, etc. By virtue of opening the Institute, a decrease in the disability of the population is expected, and the Institute will also provide social and personal adjustment of patients with disabilities. Moreover, the Institute will become a modern educational platform for training doctors in the new specialty of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine. Last year alone, 15 per cent of all the doctors in the country trained in the new specialty took their training course at PRMU.

·       Since 2008, the Nizhny Novgorod Region has been a pivotal region for the development of medical rehabilitation in Russia, and has already won the leading positions in this area. The Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation has calculated the need for rehabilitation for each clinical entity: in total, about 6.5 million patients all over the country require it. Medicine faces serious challenges: it is not enough to perform an operation, to save a life, it is crucial to restore the patient's quality of life. Restore it to the level before the onset of the disease. Great hopes are placed on PRMU Institute of Rehabilitation in this complex, continuous, systemic process, because it is not only the location for the patients to recover but also, which is just as important, doctors from all over the country will be trained there (Galina Ivanova, Chief Specialist in Medical Rehabilitation of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, Chairman of the All-Russian Public Organization for the Promotion of Medical Rehabilitology "Union of Rehabilitologists of Russia").
The Institute of Rehabilitation with an area of more than 3,000 sq. m includes 2 clinical departments with total bed capacity of fifty 24/7/365 beds: the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine for patients with central nervous system and sensory processing disorders – 20 beds, and the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine for patients with locomotor and peripheral nervous system disorders – 30 beds. Besides, 5 day-stay hospital beds have been allocated (2 beds for patients with central nervous system and sensory processing disorders, 3 beds for the rehabilitation of patients with locomotor and peripheral nervous system disorders).

·       About 1.5 thousand patients will receive medical care, high-tech including, at our Institute every year. We can be sure now that the expertise of PRMU in the field of patient rehabilitation is at the federal level. Support from the federal center represented by the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Nizhny Novgorod Region has enabled such a grand event. Patients with serious illnesses have a chance for living a full-on life now (Nikolay Karyakin, Rector of PRMU).

The Institute of Rehabilitation has also fully equipped a Social Rehabilitation Apartment for patients with locomotor disorders. A telerehabilitation platform has been created for patients using virtual reality technologies.

·       The creation of the Institute of Rehabilitation started in 2021 to finalize the forming of a three-level system for the rehabilitation of patients with central nervous system and sensory processing disorders in the Nizhny Novgorod region. This is the first rehabilitation center in the region that gives high-tech medical rehabilitation care (David Melik-Guseinov, Deputy Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, Minister of Health of the Nizhny Novgorod Region).

Rehabilitation will be free for the patients – by quotas covered by the Compulsory Medical Insurance Fund and, where possible, the High Technology Medical Care Fund.
