Nowruz: the Iranian New Year

On March 22, 2023, Iranian students of PRMU took part in the cultural and educational event "Nowruz: the Iranian New Year" held at the premises of the Russian Language Institute and the Scientific and Educational Center for Oriental Studies of the Nizhny Novgorod Dobrolyubov State Linguistic University.

The New Year comes exactly at midnight all over the world but not in Iran. It all depends on the movement of heavenly bodies in this country: right at the moment when the Sun equalizes night and day, Nowruz welcomes the arrival of spring – and the New Year according to the Iranian calendar.

Esfidvajani Mohammad Arabpour, a 2nd year student, spoke not only about the sights of his native city of Isfahan, which is located in the center of the country, but also about New Year rituals in Iran. One of the main traditions is spring cleaning before the New Year. A real Persian who honors the traditions of his forefathers should have seven sacred treats on the New Year's table with the names beginning with the same letter of ‘s’. I think that Iranians following their traditions cleaned and tidied their rooms at the hostel and cooked holiday dishes.

Ali Valizadehchari's speech about the city of Babol located in northern Iran, 20 km away from the Caspian Sea, was really fascinating. Despite the fact that Babol University of Medical Sciences (MUBabol) is located in his hometown, Ali decided to study at PRMU in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. As a future doctor, he showed the audience Rohani Hospital that he compared with Hospital named after N.A. Semashko by the number of its buildings.

By the by, do you know what autumn is like in Babol? It looks like autumn in Switzerland Park, Nizhny Novgorod, – like Boldino autumn for us Russians looking at the photographs: ‘the forests dressed in crimson and gold’. If you are tired and need a change of scenery, a virtual walk through Cloud Forest in Iran can be a good place for you to relax.

Happy New Year to all the students who come from Iran! سال نو مبارک [sāl-e now mobārak]
