7 overseas students interned at PRMU in summer 2024

The summer internship season at Privolzhsky Research Medical University is over. Last summer, 7 international students from distant countries visited the university under academic mobility programs. They plunged into medical practice in a plethora of fields at the university and its clinical sites.

So future cardiovascular surgeons – Rosa Elvira Paullo Pimentel, a student of Universidad Privada del Valle, Cochabamba (Bolivia), and Chen Wan Lin fr om Kaohsiung Medical University (Taiwan) – completed their internship at the Department of Hospital Surgery named after B.A. Korolev at the Cardiology Center wh ere they learned – together with Yashvardhan Jain, an exchange student fr om International Higher School of Medicine (Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek), – to examine cardiovascular patients, identify diseases and build treatment tactics. During their two weeks in Nizhny Novgorod, not only did they undergo internship training programs but they also got acquainted with the city, its culture and sights.

"My surgical supervisor entrusts me (under his supervision, as you would expect!) with giving access to blood vessels which will later on act as cardiac shunts to provide nutrients for the heart. I am benefitting a lot from this internship, because I am planning to become a cardiovascular surgeon after university, and now I have a unique opportunity to master some of manual skills working with real patients", – said Rosa Elvira Paullo Pimentel.

Majid Al Lawati, a student from Oman, did a one-month internship at the Thoracic Department of Nizhny Novgorod City Clinical Hospital No. 5. He accompanied doctors at all the steps of patient care, performed various surgical procedures, including thoracostomy. Besides, Majid was briefed on other departments functioning and responded to medical emergencies at the Emergency Surgical Unit.

Barkin Goroglu from Turkey, a student at Tekirdağ Namık Kemal Üniversitesi (Tekirdağ), completed an internship at PRMU Central Research Laboratory. Within a month, he had developed liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, microscopy techniques, exercised in the methods of tissue specimen preparation for histology and those of genomic DNA extraction from whole blood samples.

"We introduced the student to modern research in the laboratory, as well as statistical calculation of clinical trial data. During the internship, he showed a healthy interest and a passion for learning. He was polite, punctual and committed to work", – notes Irina Vasilyevna Mukhina, D. Sc, Head of PRMU Institute of Fundamental Medicine, Head of the Department of Normal Physiology named after N.Y. Belenkov.

In August, Tolga Bakirtas from Sarajevo Medical University (Bosnia and Herzegovina) interned at the Department of Endocrinology and Internal Diseases, as well as Yigit Akbulut, a student at Bashkent University (Ankara, Turkey), a grandson of a 1960s Soviet medical university alumnus, which influenced his choice of Russia as a venue for internship.

"It has turned out that the clinical site of the university wh ere Yigit is studying is a private clinic. The students at the university have had no patient contact after four years of study. Neither manual skills in nursing nor physical examination skills were practiced on patients; the students attended classes only. It is a highly instructive story. Overall, it should be recognized that such an internship experience is worthwhile both for our visiting ‘tourists’ and PRMU teachers. Communication cross-pollinates, gives ideas on cultural diversity and specificities of the teaching and learning process in other countries", Ilya Grigoryevich Pochinka, D. Sc, Head of PRMU Department of Endocrinology and Internal Diseases, concluded.

In 2024, 25 overseas students came to intern at PRMU under a number of international agreements. This year, 30 PRMU students went to intern abroad.
