Chess tournament among BRICS students in Russia

In Nizhny Novgorod, the Headquarters of public support of the United Russia political party hosted a chess tournament among BRICS students in the Russian Federation. The event was held on the eve of the opening of the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, as reported by the Headquarters press. Among the participants were students of the Linguistics University of Nizhny Novgorod and Privolzhsky Research Medical University from India, as well as Iran, Iraq, and Turkey. Nizhny Novgorod Headquarters of public support participated in the tournament joining the headquarters in the Kirov and Tambov regions and the Republic of Kalmykia online.

Sergey Karjakin, Senator of the Russian Federation, International Grandmaster, Vice World Chess Champion, World Rapid & Blitz Champion, launched the competition via conference call. "There is a warm, friendly atmosphere here at the Headquarters. It was nice to watch the students play. They were superb playing as amateurs, – a vast number of people did a beautiful checkmate with a knight or an elephant. This is no longer the level of an amateur, but rather closer to a professional. The battle was serious," — said Tatyana Khilova, one of the tournament hosts, Executive Director of the Chess Federation of the Nizhny Novgorod region.

The winners of the tournament in Nizhny Novgorod were as follows:
  • Al-Mamoori Hussein Ali Jawad, PRMU (Iraq) — 1st place
  • Utkarsh Sanjay Chate, PRMU (India) — 2nd
  • Dhahir Muslim Aqeel, PRMU (Iraq) — 3rd
  • Raj Divyanshu, NGLU (India) — 3rd
"I’ve been playing chess since I was four. I started with our housemate, and now I play online," — said Al-Mamoori Hussein Ali Jawad, tournament winner.

"I like playing chess, especially with friends. Chess promotes brain development," — added Koral Batuhan (Turkey), tournament participant, a student of LUNN.

To recap, giving opportunities to do sports within easy reach, supporting socially significant projects with a focus on mass sports (among other things), encouraging local residents to be physically active and make healthy lifestyle choices are part of the national program of the United Russia party. As previously reported, Gleb Nikitin, Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region, secretary of a regional branch of United Russia, and Sergey Karjakin, International Grandmaster, Vice World Chess Champion, World Rapid & Blitz Champion, member of the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation launched a pilot project "Sergey Karjakin's Chess Club" at the Headquarters of public support on 23 November 2023.

According to Gleb Nikitin, "the opening of a Chess Club will give an extra incentive to the residents of the city and the region to learn playing this unique game." Besides, the Headquarters host the so-called evenings of free piece play, a chess coworking where Nizhegorodians can play with opponents of any level.
