Faculty History

From the moment of opening on September 1, 1988 to the present day, the Faculty of Dentistry has gone a long way of formation and development from a small department of dentistry to one of the leading dental faculties among the universities of the country. The opening of the faculty marked the beginning of a new stage in the development of medicine and the formation of the Nizhny Novgorod Dental School.

One of the initiators of the opening of the Faculty and its first dean until 1993 was Associate Professor of Dentistry of the Department of Hospital Surgery of the Faculty of Medicine, Candidate of Medical Sciences Irina Dmitrievna Kinyapina.

On September 1, 1990, a department was opened at the medical Academy, initially combining surgical, therapeutic, orthopedic dentistry, including children's dentistry. Currently, research teams of the Department of Surgical Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery (Head of the Department, MD, Professor E.A. Durnovo), Therapeutic Dentistry (Head of the Department, MD, Associate Professor O.A. Uspenskaya), orthopedic Dentistry and Orthodontics (Head of the Department, MD, Associate Professor M.Y. Sahakyan), pediatric dentistry (head of the department, MD, associate professor S.Yu. Kosyuga), propaedeutic dentistry (Head of the Department, PhD, Associate Professor A.V. Kochubeynik) and dentistry of the FDPO (Head of the Department, MD, Professor S.I. Gazhva). The names of professors Evgeny Nikolaevich Zhulev, Svetlana Iosifovna Gazhva, Larisa Nikolaevna Kazarina, Lyudmila Mikhailovna Lukins, who created the glory of Nizhny Novgorod dentistry, are known not only in Russia, but also in the world professional community.

In 1993, Professor E.N. Zhulev was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, and in 1996 — Associate Professor A.N. Kuznetsov. Since 2006, Professor E.N. Zhulev has been appointed Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, and since 2013 — Associate Professor, Candidate of Medical Sciences Alena Valeryevna Kochubeynik.

In 2004, by the decision of the Scientific Council of Nizhny Novgorod State Medical University, a scholarship named after I.D. Kinyapina was established to award excellent students of the Faculty of Dentistry.

To date, more than 450 people are students of the Faculty of Dentistry.

Students take an active part in regional stages of student Olympiads and competitions, take prizes.

Most of the staff of the departments are graduates of the faculty and are constantly involved in the development of the Nizhny Novgorod dental school .

Our teachers have received high awards.

The title "Honored Worker of the Higher School of the Russian Federation" was awarded:

• Doctor of Medical Sciences to Professor Zhulev Evgeny Nikolaevich;
• Doctor of Medical Sciences to Professor Gazhva Svetlana Iosifovna;
• Doctor of Medical Sciences to Professor Larisa Nikolaevna Kazarina.

Since 2018, the Faculty of Dentistry has been a part of the Institute of Dentistry of PIMU on a functional basis, under the guidance of Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor E.A. Durnovo.v
