Meeting of East and West

On May 14, the All-Russian Olympiad in Russian as a Foreign Language and Local Lore Studies "800 Years over the Volga and the Oka" was held in PRMU among foreign students of Nizhny Novgorod and Moscow. The event was dedicated to an important date in the history of Russia – the 800th anniversary of Nizhny Novgorod. As at the times of Nizhny Novgorod Trade Fair, guests from the East and West met in our city: students from Mongolia, Ecuador, Turkey, Egypt, Serbia, Iraq, China, Botswana, Zambia, Sudan and other countries took part in the contest.
Teams of 6 Nizhny Novgorod universities (PRMU, NNGASU, Glinka Nizhny Novgorod State Conservatoire (NNGK), LUNN, UNN,  NSTU) and a team of the Higher School of Economics (Moscow) decided to compete for the best knowledge of Nizhny Novgorod.
The Olympiad was held in the form of a quest and a reading contest.
During the reading competition, participants had to read works dedicated to Nizhny Novgorod. Thanks to the poetic choice (lines by A. S. Pushkin, Nizhny Novgorod and Gorky poets) the competition was breathtaking.
1st place was taken by the students of PRMU: Elrashid Mohammed Omer Ibrahim and Omer Ahmed Alshayh.
After reading the poem by B. E. Pilnik "Nizhny Novgorod Tea", students from Sudan learned that tea is not only a well-known drink, but also a word-bundle characteristic of residents of the Nizhny Novgorod region. The guys loved our Volga, native, our Nizhny Novgorod word "tea" so much that every time they answered the question: "Where are you from?", they answer: "Tea, neighbors, tea, shabras and fellow countrymen, we are Nizhny Novgorod residents."
2nd place was taken by Atesh Ismail, a student of LUNN, who performed the poem "Nizhny Novgorod" by A.A. Kotov.
3rd place was taken by Ren Xiaodong, a student of NNGK, who performed the "Anthem of Nizhny Novgorod".
The Olympiad was also held in the form of a quest, tasks of which corresponded to the difficult but vivid history of Nizhny Novgorod – a city that protected, saved, traded and inspired. In addition to knowledge, the participants had to demonstrate ability to think analytically, react quickly, read, write and speak Russian correctly. Almost all students coped with these novel tasks: they found the heart of the city –Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin in the hostel, pronounced the date of the city's foundation in pure Russian, read Minin's letter addressed to descendants, smelled, touched and named the goods of the Nizhny Novgorod Trade Fair, and also found a portrait of N. A. Dobrolyubov and listed the inventions of I. P. Kulibin, "rolled" on all the bridges over the Oka, "flew" with the crew of V. P. Chkalov.
The jury was pleasantly surprised by the students ' knowledge of history of the city of Gorky: the Volga car was easily distinguished from the products of AVTOVAZ, the presence of the T-34 tank in the walls of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin was explained, and the reason for the renaming of the city in 1932 was named.
The only problem was Theophile Gauthier's phrase about the city: almost all teams decided that the French writer could not breathe without Nizhny Novgorod, and he simply did not see the point of living without seeing Nizhny Novgorod.
Among this display of love and attention to the almost native city, we did not want to single out the winners, but had to.
1st place-the team of UNN
2nd place-team PRMU (Ali Kahtan Azeez, Hussein Kareem, Al Mohammed Abdullah Amer)
3rd place – NNGASU team
All the winners received worthy awards: mugs, thermos flasks, pens with symbols of PRMU, individual gifts with symbols of Nizhny Novgorod from the event sponsor International Charitable Public Association "Volga Migration Center". All other participants of the event received memorable gifts. So to speak, they did not leave empty-handed, as merchants left the Nizhny Novgorod Trade Fair in their time.
